Books: Stories I Only Tell My Friends

photo 1 photo 2 photo 3

That time I went to see/hear Rob Lowe discuss his new book, Love Life. Well I've only just read his first book, Stories I Only Tell My Friends, and I really enjoyed it. I love the way he sets up each story. Instead of telling you right off the bat what actor he is running around with as a child or what move set he visits, Rob only gives the first names and descriptions until the end of each story. Then BAM, it all comes together.

To give you a little taste, picture this...a young Rob roaming about and sees a group of kids ahead filming their own war movie. When he runs up to see what their doing, he meets a boy, Sean, who introduces him to his pals Charlie, Emilio, and Chris. Sean explains that Charlie's and Emilio's dad is busy overseas filming an actual war movie...... can you guess who these kids turn out to be and what movie the father is in?!?!? I suppose the name Emilio gives it away and I should've realized then. Needless to say it's an enjoyable, easy read. I'm looking forward to reading Love Life.

Rob, God bless him he still looks glorious in his older age - was very sweet and well spoken. I was the youngest in the room by far and it was fascinating watching these women drool over him but hey, who can blame them?! At just under 6ft, golden tan, and beautiful baby blues, he is quite easy on the eyes. But as he likes to point out - pretty people have a rough life too. In his first book, he explains his roller coaster of a life and some of it may even surprise you...or not. Nonetheless, definitely a good read.

Thanks to The MOMS for inviting me to the lovely and intimate gathering at The Paramount Hotel.

Inspiration & Motivation

We've come to another month and the beginning of another week. Time for a bit of motivation to remind yourself of where you are in life and where you want to go.

Inspiration & Motivation

Sunday Inspiration & Motivation

That feeling of relaxation is replaced with anxiety as the weekend comes to a close and Monday begins to set in. The beginning of the work week and the daily grind. I find that a little bit of motivational quotes gives the needed boost to remind one of the work they do and why they do it. If you're not doing something you take pleasure in, than why do it at all? Yes - it may be easier said than done, but life is too short to make excuses for why you're not doing something you love.

Happy Sunday - get some sleep so you can awake and kick Monday's arse.

Dark Thrillers

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

Early this summer, I gave in and bought a copy of Gone Girl after hearing numerous people rave about this dark thriller. As someone who takes their time with reading a book, I zipped right through this one. I couldn't put it down. Each page left you sitting at the edge of your seat wondering what would happen next. I love a great mystery and the twists and turns in this book really keep you engaged with the characters.

News - The movie is in the works and Ben Affleck is to play the character Nick (much better role for him, unlike Batman). The exciting yet interesting news is for whom they've casted as Nick's college-aged mistress. 'Blurred Lines' was such a hit, they've signed Emily Ratajkowski. I suppose the roles line up after the nudey performance she gave in Robin Thicke's hit video. Power to ya girl!

Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight

Post- adrenaline pumping Gone Girl, suggested titles that were presented to me included Reconstructing Amelia. It took me a few months but I've finally picked up the book - and by book I mean tablet. I can already tell this book will lead me down the rabbit hole of obsession and must-read. The teenage culture described throughout the book is of modern day adolescent behavior and a novel I believe high school students should pick up. With the amount of anti-bullying campaigns that go on, perhaps the kids have dismissed it all similar to the way we dismiss pop-up ads on multi-media devices. Maybe they need a book or a movie to express the dangers it all leads to especially if it hits close to home with a connection to a particular character.

Leandra Medine- TMR

Leandra Medine- TMR

Life

Considering the rainy day and not a clue what to post about today, I began browsing my daily blogs looking and catching up on posts. Over time, Leandra Medine of The Man Repeller has increased the depth of her writing and at times will surpass what is trendy, repelling, and fun. At times, she will bestow something of a life lesson. Today, after watching this video by David Foster Wallace, I decided this is what I would share with you all. Whether you are graduating this month or working through the daily grind of life, this is definitely an important video to listen to and watch. It will encourage you to make choices instead of maintaining autopilot. WATCH

"Gatsby? What Gatsby?"

A classic returns to the silver screen. Although The Great Gatsby was supposed to premier on Christmas Day, they claimed the film was not ready- more like they didn't want to compete with Les Miserables for an Oscar. I finally read the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel the other week and loved it! I will admit I saw the Robert Redford film before reading the book and knew what to expect. However, the book provided further detail, as many books do compared to their film renditions. It is a definite must read before the May 2013 premier of The Great Gatsby. There have been a few versions in theater before the 2013 rendition. Even Paul Rudd -pause, I said Paul Rudd- was in a Gatsby film as Nick Carraway. I'm not gonna lie, I most likely will see the midnight premier.
